A first day can begin before you reach the hotel. Step out of Paddington, put the bag down when you can, and give yourself a route with one clear start and plenty of room to change your mind.

01

Start by the water

Little Venice is near Paddington and makes a gentler first stop than a rush to the monuments. The Canal & River Trust describes narrowboats, cafés, and open towpaths around the meeting of the Grand Union and Regent’s canals. Walk a little, sit a while, and let the arrival settle.

02

Choose one longer walk

If you want a route, the Canal & River Trust maps a Little Venice to Camden towpath walk of about two miles. It is a useful plan for a clear day, but not a rule. In rain, a compact umbrella and a shorter neighborhood walk can be the better version of the same afternoon.

03

Save culture for later

For a second chapter, cross town by transit and explore Bankside. Shakespeare’s Globe offers guided theatre tours, with times and availability on its own site. Book only after you know your arrival will leave enough room; a good first day is not a race against a reservation.

Keep close.
